Three Ways to Incorporate FUNCTION, CORE, and BALANCE into your workouts!
I love an exercise that’s a good multi-tasker and these lunges certainly fit the bill! They incorporate three things I’m passionate about:
1. Function – lunges are about as functional as you can get. How many times do you lunge during the day without even thinking about it? It might not look like a perfect forward lunge, which is why your lunges should not just be in one plane – they should be in various directions!
2. Core – I love core work that isn’t “crunches.” There are literally hundreds of ways to work the core, and core work IN function is core work for everyday life – beyond the six-pack. Believe it or not, our core was not designed for visual appeal. It was designed to help hold us upright, it was designed to stabilize us so we could move efficiently, and it was designed to give us more power and effectiveness in our movement.
3. Balance – I preach balance a lot b/c earlier in my career I worked with older adults who struggled with balance. And why do most people end up in the nursing home? Because they have a debilitating fall that they never recover from. We lose balance as we age, but balance can be trained, so I incorporate at least one balance exercise in every workout.
