15 years ago, no one was talking about the pelvic floor. Most women didn’t even know what the pelvic floor was! And any pelvic floor issues (leaking, prolapse, painful s3x) were 🫢 – most women didn’t dare talk to their doctor about it, less one another.
While I’m thankful for WAY more awareness about the pelvic floor, it’s now a highly marketed commodity. Where there’s a problem, there’s an opportunity to make some quick money.
“Try this at-home kegel machine! You can order it right off Amazon!”
“Come use the new machine at our office – it’ll give you the same results as doing 1000 kegels!”
“Try this new med!”
“Try these pelvic floor workouts!” (by someone who has never even treated a pelvic floor or understands how it works)
“Let’s just do surgery and we’ll get everything fixed!”
Suddenly, we have a hundred band-aid, one-size-fits-all approaches to “helping” your pelvic floor.
Would you go see anyone besides a dentist for your cavity? Would you trust an online tutorial to fix it? Or someone who dabbles in teeth but has never been trained? Would you be ok if they gave you something that would temporarily help the symptoms but not ever address the actual problem? Or gave you a solution that should work for EVERYONE with any sort of tooth pain, without ever even evaluating your teeth?
Then why are all of these solutions ok for your pelvic floor?
You have a complex body, and you are more complex than what a machine or a med can fix. The problem with any of these approaches is that they treat you as a one-dimensional being and as having the same problem as everyone else. I’ve rarely see one patient that is exactly like another or has the EXACT root cause. That’s why a machine, a med, a free workout, or even a surgery isn’t a great option for your pelvic floor problem.
You deserve to be evaluated by an EXPERT who not only understands the pelvic floor, but is going to get at the root, underlying problem (and HINT: it’s not usually just a weakness issue that a bunch of kegels can fix).
You deserve the very best care – unfortunately, most often you have to be the proactive person in seeking it out for yourself. If you’d like to get to the root causes, I’d love to work with you!
My patients get 60-90 minute appts, and most of them only need 2-4 before they’ve met their goals! You’re a complex being, and that’s a GOOD thing! God made your body with such intricacy – so work with an expert who understands it and won’t just settle for a bandaid approach.
