My very honest thoughts for medical providers and patients trying to discern who to work with:
The best provider is the one who knows what they don’t know.
The one who stays in their lane and is well-connected with other experts.
The one who says, “I’m actually not sure about that, but let me do some research for you.”
The one who is humble enough to refer you on and secure enough to do so without hesitation.
The one who’s not controlled by money and is more concerned with getting you the absolute best care possible.
I am incredibly privileged to run a niche business. I get to be an expert in my field, and while I’m certain that I don’t do any of this perfectly, I will be the first to say…
“I’m not the PT to rehab your ACL.”
“I’m not the PT to rehab your total shoulder.”
I’m not the one you want to send your little kids.”
I’m not a chiropractor, so I won’t try to “adjust you,” and I’m not your doctor, so I will be quick to send you off or call one if anything appears at all abnormal.
My very favorite providers are the ones who don’t even hesitate to send their patients to me. They are doctors, midwives, and chiropractors who are my friends and people I greatly respect. I don’t try to steal their patients; instead, we work together to give these patients the absolute best care. I will sing these providers’ praises all day long!
But probably one of the most frustrating things in my career has been providers who work outside their true expertise or brush off issues rather than sending them to the experts who can help.
I know very few providers who can do it all really well. There is absolutely no lack in the kingdom, and often we try to do it all because of a scarcity mindset. But when we have the patient’s best interest in mind—what’s actually going to help them heal—we can trust that the Father will take care of us, even if it means referring a patient to someone else. We can trust that the patient is actually going to be MORE impressed by our active interest in providing them the very best care – even if it doesn’t come from us.
